Why I’m Bullish on Greif Inc. (With One Honest Caveat)

My View on Greif Inc.: A Bullish Buyer’s Take, With One Honest Caveat

I’ll say it straight: I think Greif Inc. is the most reliable choice for industrial packaging—when your order fits their sweet spot. And I know that’s not the balanced, fence-sitting answer you usually get. But after five years of managing packaging purchases for a mid‑size manufacturing company, I’ve learned that “best” depends on fit. Here’s why I’m bullish on Greif, and where I’d tell you to walk away.

The Big Picture: Why Greif Deserves a Bullish Rating

Let’s start with the obvious. Greif’s product portfolio is massive—steel drums, plastic drums, fiber drums, IBCs, corrugated packaging, containerboard. For a buyer like me who processes 60–80 orders a year across eight vendors, having one supplier that can cover 90% of my packaging needs is a huge time saver. The 2024 PCA containerboard acquisition only strengthened that. Greif now controls more of the raw material supply chain, which (in my experience) translates into better pricing stability and shorter lead times.

“When I first took over purchasing in 2020, I assumed the cheapest vendor was the smartest choice. Three rush orders and two rejected invoices later, I learned about total cost of ownership.”

Three Arguments That Changed My Mind

1. The “Expensive” Myth

Everyone assumes Greif carries a premium. And if you only look at per‑unit price, maybe they do. But here’s what I’ve found: the total cost is usually lower. Their containers arrive on spec, the invoicing is clean, and the sustainability documentation helps our company meet its ESG targets (per FTC Green Guides, claims like “recyclable” need proof—Greif provides it). One unreliable supplier cost me $2,400 when finance rejected an expense because the receipt was handwritten. That doesn’t happen with Greif.

2. The PCA Deal Changes the Game

I follow analyst opinions—bullish and bearish—on Greif. The bearish side often points to integration risk after the PCA acquisition. In practice, I’ve seen the opposite. Since the deal closed, our containerboard orders have been more consistent, and the corrugated boxes for our Nissan Murano brochure shipments (yeah, we print those PDFs for promotions) arrive with fewer dents. The bull case—market leadership plus sustainable packaging demand—matches what I see on the ground.

3. One Trend Few Talk About: The “Box Office” of Custom Packaging

Here’s a weird example. Last quarter we printed a run of Smokey and the Bandit movie posters for a client event. Poster tubes and shipping cartons—everyone thinks any box will do. But the poster corners got crushed twice when I used a budget vendor. Greif’s corrugated mailers saved the day. It’s not just about drums and bulk containers; their box engineering is solid for odd‑shaped items too.

Addressing the Obvious Pushback

I hear the bearish arguments: “Greif is overkill for small orders,” “their minimum quantities are too high,” “you pay for the brand.” All true—if you’re ordering 10 boxes and need them tomorrow. For quick, small‑volume stuff, I still use a local printer (think 48 Hour Print style). But for any order over $2,000 or with a critical deadline, Greif has been the safer bet. The way I see it, the certainty is worth the price.

My Honest Limitation (and Why I’m Still Bullish)

If you’re a one‑person shop buying 25 steel drums a year, or you need custom die‑cut packaging with a three‑day turnaround, Greif might not be your best fit. Their strength is scale and consistency, not speed or flexibility at the low end. That’s okay. No vendor does everything perfectly.

But for the 80% of industrial orders that fall into the medium‑to‑large, mixed‑product category, I’m convinced Greif delivers a better outcome than the alternatives. My advice: bookmark their product catalog (see how easy it is to bookmark a tab in your browser? It’s that simple for your packaging workflow). Just remember to check the fit before you commit.

Final thought: The best vendor is the one that makes you look good to your VP while keeping the accounting team happy. Greif does that for me.
