If you're here, it's because you need to know whether something will fit in a Bankers Box—or why the “standard” size you ordered doesn't match reality. I get asked this more than you'd think. I'm a quality/compliance manager at a records-storage manufacturer, and reviewing box dimensions against spec is my daily job: about 200 product configurations a year, give or take.
In 2024 I rejected just over 8% of first-article samples from suppliers. Not because the boxes fell apart—because they were off by an eighth of an inch. When someone's shelf layout depends on uniform dimensions, 1/8″ might as well be a mile.
These answers reflect what I've seen on spec sheets and in the warehouse as of March 2025. Corrugated boxes vary from maker to maker, which is why I say “about” a lot. I mean “about” literally.
What is a Bankers Box, anyway? Is Fellowes the only company that makes them?
“Bankers box” started as a Fellowes product name—the classic drop-front corrugated file box. A “Fellowes Bankers Box” is the original brand, and the whole category is named after it.
These days, though, “bankers box” is also a generic term, like “Kleenex.” If you buy a box labeled “bankers box” from any major office supplier, you're getting the same concept: a corrugated storage container sized for paper records. That doesn't make all of them identical. It just means the word “bankers” tells you the intended use, not the exact dimensions. Which brings us to the next question.
What are the standard dimensions of a Bankers Box?
Here are the two configurations I see most often in current product spec sheets:
- Full-size box: about 24″ long × 12″ wide × 10″ high (61 × 30 × 25 cm).
- Transfer box / half-size box: about 15″ long × 12″ wide × 10″ high (38 × 30 × 25 cm).
Those are exterior measurements, and that's where a lot of confusion starts. Corrugated walls take up real space. A typical single-wall board is about 3/16″ thick, so a box with a 24″ outside length can have an inside length closer to 23½–23¾″. That matters if you're sliding folders in or stacking boxes edge-to-edge on a metal shelf.
Also, don't assume “letter size” and “legal size” mean the same thing at every manufacturer. Some labels use “legal” for the longer 24″ box; others sell a separate legal version that's longer in one direction to fit legal file folders. The label alone isn't enough. Check the actual interior dimensions listed before ordering.
What are the dimensions of a regular envelope?
In North America, a “regular” envelope usually means a #10 business envelope: 4⅛ inches high × 9½ inches long. That works out to roughly 10.8 cm × 24.1 cm.
Per current USPS letter-size standards, a #10 fits comfortably within the maximum dimensions for letter mail (6⅛″ high × 11½″ long × ¼″ thick), so it mails at the standard letter rate rather than the higher “flat” rate. Outside the U.S., “regular envelope” often means a DL envelope: 110 mm × 220 mm.
Will a regular envelope fit in a Bankers Box? Yes, easily. A #10 envelope is shorter than a standard letter-size file folder, so you can file it inside a folder or drop it directly into a transfer box without folding anything. That's one of those boring compatibility details people don't think about until they're stuffing 2,000 envelopes into archival boxes for the first time.
Which Bankers Box size should I buy?
Before you pick “letter” or “legal,” ask yourself two questions: What are you storing, and how often will you need to get it back out?
If you're storing standard letter-size paperwork and you'll pull files regularly, the 15″ transfer box is the better choice. It holds enough for most departments, and when it's full, it stays at a weight you can actually lift. A full 24″ box of paper gets heavy fast—40 lb or more is realistic—and nobody plans their ergonomics around a 45-lb cardboard box.
If you're archiving inactive records on industrial shelving, the 24″ size is usually more economical because you store more per box. Just keep the weight in mind.
If you store legal folders or oversized documents, measure the folder first. A legal folder doesn't belong in a box designed for letter folders, and cramming it in bends corners—which is how records get damaged before they even reach storage. “It's almost the right size” is not a filing strategy.
Can you use Bankers Boxes to build a playhouse?
“Bankers box playhouse” is a real search phrase. I know, because it shows up on our spec inquiries more than you'd expect. The big 24×12×10 boxes do look like giant cardboard building blocks, and they're certainly paintable.
Here's my honest boundary: I inspect boxes for paper storage, not for children's furniture. No storage-box manufacturer I know rates their product as a toy, and no quality inspection changes that. Cardboard is flammable. It weakens when wet. A stack that looks stable can tip. So if you build a playhouse out of Bankers Boxes, keep it low, tape and brace the corners, anchor it where possible, and don't let kids climb on top.
And please don't believe any listing that claims a corrugated storage box is fireproof or completely crush-proof. It isn't. We don't claim that, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does.
Why is the inside of my “24-inch” box only about 23½ inches?
Because the 24″ is almost always the outside dimension. This is the most common specification complaint I deal with, and it's usually not a defect—it's a mismatch between the label and the customer's expectation.
Manufacturers typically hold the overall outside dimension to a tolerance of about ±⅛″. On a single-wall corrugated box, the walls themselves eat roughly ⅜″ out of the inside length before you account for score lines, flaps, and manufacturing variance. That's normal. What's not normal is a spec sheet that doesn't say whether the number is inside or outside.
If exact dimensions matter—and they do when you're matching existing shelving or building something modular—measure the actual assembled box before you order a hundred more. If you're buying multiple boxes for a project like a playhouse, buy them in one lot. Cardboard is a natural material, and two production runs can differ by fractions of an inch even from the same manufacturer. That's not a quality failure. It's just the difference between a spec sheet and the real world.
