7:43 on a Tuesday. That's when my phone became a fire alarm.
A vehicle upfitter in Chicago was on the line. A trim piece on a commercial van had peeled loose during delivery, and the customer was standing in the parking lot. They needed 3M two-sided tape automotive grade by noon—or a $70,000 vehicle stayed on the lift.
By 9:15, a print shop called. A publisher's event was 48 hours away, and the lamination on a run of bespoke bookmark samples was lifting at the edges. Four hundred pieces. Client meeting Friday.
At 10:50, the third call came. A manufacturing plant in Ohio had a cracked bracket on a conveyor. The manager asked whether 3M structural adhesive could handle a metal-to-metal repair in under four hours. Losing the weekend shift would cost them roughly $18,000 in delayed orders.
Meanwhile, an email landed in my inbox with the subject line: "Should I use Teflon tape on brass fittings?"
I almost laughed. One of these things is not like the others.
By the end of the day, that email was the one I couldn't stop thinking about.
I run the adhesive and packaging side of a distributor that carries 3M products. I've handled 200+ rush orders in 14 years, including same-day turnarounds for automotive shops, print shops, and manufacturing plants. 3M Two-Sided Tape Automotive Grade: The Van Trim
When someone calls and says "3M two-sided tape automotive," they almost always mean VHB. That's Very High Bond acrylic foam tape. It's not the same as the double-sided stuff you'd hang a poster with. VHB flows into microscopic surface pores and cures into a structural bond. That's why it's the standard for exterior trim and emblems.
The product was never the problem. The prep was.
VHB sticks best to clean, scuffed surfaces. Ideally, you hit it with an adhesion promoter first. We rushed a roll of VHB 5952 plus two little bottles of 3M primer. My instructions over the phone were quick: wipe with isopropyl alcohol. Scuff the trim with fine Scotch-Brite. Wipe again. Apply primer. Wait 60 seconds. Then tape, press hard, let it sit.
Everything I'd read early in my career said the chemistry does the work. In practice, the prep does the work. The chemistry just makes the prep permanent.
Sometimes the best answer is the most boring one: clean it properly before you stick it.
The van was back out that afternoon. No callback since.
A 3M Strip for the Bespoke Bookmark Order
The print shop panic required a more patient answer. The owner kept using "3M strip" and "tape" interchangeably. What they actually needed was adhesive transfer tape—a strip of pure adhesive with no carrier film underneath.
They were hand-finishing 400 bespoke bookmark sets for a publisher's event. Thick cardstock, gold foil, lamination peeling back from the edges. Reproducing the bookmarks in two days was impossible. Re-bonding the laminate was the only realistic path, and a 3M strip was the right tool.
We sent over a roll of 3M adhesive transfer tape on a liner. The operator applied a thin strip along the delaminated edges, folded the laminate back down, and ran each bookmark through the cold laminator once. It held, and the finish stayed invisible.
One detail made a real difference on the business side: shipping. Most bookmarks fit inside USPS letter dimensions—up to 6.125 inches by 11.5 inches, no more than a quarter-inch thick. According to USPS pricing effective January 2025, a First-Class Mail letter costs $0.73. An envelope that runs heavier or oversize jumps to the $1.50 large envelope rate. For 400 bookmarks, that's the difference between about $292 and $600 in postage. The tape kept the bookmarks slim enough to stay inside the letter tier.
The order shipped on time, at the cheaper rate, and the client's event table had the bookmarks on display. The shop owner sent me a photo. I still have it.
There's something satisfying about a fix that both looks good and saves a client $300 in postage.
3M Structural Adhesive for a Conveyor Bracket—and the Answer That Wasn't Tape
The Ohio call was the serious one.
A conveyor bracket had cracked at a weld. The maintenance lead asked if 3M structural adhesive could act as a cold weld and get the line running by Saturday.
There are two answers, and I've learned to give both.
First: yes, 3M structural adhesive can be genuinely strong. Products like the DP420 epoxy in the dual syringe reach shear strengths around 3,500 psi on properly prepared aluminum. It cures in a few hours and handles temperature swings. For many repairs, it's a legitimate solution.
Second: a cracked weld on a dynamic, load-bearing conveyor bracket is not that kind of repair. That bracket carries constant vibration, shock loads, and likely bending stress. Adhesive would be a band-aid with a ticking clock. I told them a weld repair or replacement was the correct call.
They ordered new brackets from a local fabricator and had the line running Sunday. Then they ordered 3M structural adhesive anyway—for bonding steel stiffeners into sheet-metal panels, which was a perfect fit. We sold one honest answer and one very solid adhesive.
Took three failed rush orders with discount vendors back in 2022 to learn that lesson. When a customer asks for a product, sometimes the answer is "that's the wrong product" and the best thing you can sell them is the truth.
Should I Use Teflon Tape on Brass Fittings?

A facilities manager at a client site was dealing with a draining sprinkler system and wanted to reseal a brass fitting. The question was exactly: should I use Teflon tape on brass fittings?
Not a trick question, but it needs a qualified answer.
- On threaded NPT brass pipe fittings, yes. PTFE tape—the generic term for Teflon tape—is a valid thread sealant. It lubricates the threads, helps them seat, and prevents galling.
- On flare fittings or compression fittings, no. Those seal on the face or the ferrule, not on the threads. Tape won't help, and it can prevent the joint from seating properly.
- For gas lines, use the yellow PTFE tape rated for gases, not the white plumbing tape.
The conventional wisdom is "just wrap it three times clockwise." That advice ignores the more useful questions: which kind of fitting, which thread standard, and what is flowing through it. Also, wrap in the direction of the threads, so the tape doesn't unravel when you tighten.
And I'll admit: I had the exact same question myself years ago while fixing a leaking brass valve under my sink. A hardware store guy said use pipe dope. I overthought it, bought both, and used the pipe dope. It worked. Later, I used PTFE tape on a brass shower arm and it also worked. The fitting type matters more than the brand.
The bigger point: Teflon tape is a thread sealant. It is not an adhesive. It doesn't bond anything—it fills threads and lubricates. The confusion comes from the word "tape." But the van trim, the bookmarks, and the conveyor bracket all needed actual bonding. A roll of PTFE wouldn't have solved any of them.
What I Learned From That Morning
Three tape emergencies and a plumbing question. Different industries, same theme: knowing what not to use matters as much as knowing what works.
- Read the full job, not just the product label. "3M strip" can mean a double-sided tape, an adhesive transfer tape, or a structural adhesive film. "Tape" can mean a sealant. Ask what surfaces are involved and what load is on the joint.
- Prep beats product. Most field failures I see trace back to skipping a clean, scuff, or primer step. Take the extra five minutes.
- Don't be afraid to say no. The conveyor bracket was a weld job, and the customer appreciated the honesty. They came back and bought the right product for a different job the following week.
- Teflon tape is not an adhesive. It's a sealant. Great on threaded brass fittings when used correctly, useless on compression joints, and never a replacement for a true 3M bonding solution.
That evening, I finally picked up the Scarlett 18i8 manual that had been sitting on my desk for two weeks. Every page reminded me that the device sounds great, but only if you wire it the way it says. Screws tightened to the right torque, inputs set to the right mode. For someone who dispenses adhesives all day, the irony was not lost on me: almost every technical problem has a correct tool, and half the battle is just stopping to identify it.
After a day like that, the answer is clear. It's never just the tape. It's whether the tape—or the sealant, or the epoxy—is the right tool for the job.
