- Roll or strip price
- Surface prep and application labor
- Process downtime while the line is stopped
- Expected failure rate multiplied by rework cost
- Expediting, couriers, or overtime after failure
- Lost trust when a deadline slips
In March 2024, a client called 36 hours before an event because a poster had lifted from an outdoor panel. They had saved $25 on an indoor-rated mounting strip. The install space was unheated and running at 2°C. The correct 3M strip for that poster would have cost about $4 more. The after-failure service call came to $300, and the poster had to be reprinted overnight. That is the difference between price and total cost.

When an order is urgent, the shortest path isn't “grab whatever is in stock.” It's writing down what the tape must survive, then choosing the product family from there.
- Specify the substrate and cleanliness.
- Identify the service temperature range and environment.
- Calculate the load direction and weight on the tape.
- Decide whether removal is part of the application.
- Run a small sample test at real conditions before the full run.
