Berlin Packaging FAQ: A Procurement Manager's Take on Cost, Speed, and Hidden Fees

What you'll find here

I've been managing procurement for a mid-sized logistics company for about six years now. Every quarter, I place orders for boxes, bubble wrap, tape, and printed materials like flyers and business cards. I've used berlin packaging off and on for the last three years, and I've tracked every invoice.

Below are the questions I wish I'd asked before my first order. Some I learned the hard way.

1. Is Berlin Packaging just for boxes, or do they do printing too?

Short answer: both. That's actually one of the main reasons I use them. I can order corrugated boxes and business cards in the same checkout. From the outside, it looks like a packaging company that tacked on printing. The reality is their print shop runs separately—they have dedicated equipment for flyers, posters, and foam board signage.

(I did a test order in Q2 2024: 500 flyers and a roll of bubble wrap. Both arrived in the same shipment. That convenience saves me an extra vendor relationship to manage. Simple.)

2. How does Berlin Packaging compare to Uline on price?

I get this question a lot. People assume one is always cheaper. Here's the thing: it depends on what you're buying and how urgently you need it.

In 2023, I compared quotes for a $4,200 annual contract on standard shipping boxes. Uline's base price was lower by about 12%. But when I factored in shipping costs, the total was roughly equal. Berlin Packaging offers coupon codes and discounts pretty regularly—that's worth checking before you order.

To be fair, Uline has a broader catalog for specialty packaging. But for the standard stuff I buy, Berlin Packaging is competitive, especially if you hit a promo. (I don't have hard data on industry-wide pricing trends, but based on my experience, the gap narrows significantly once you apply discounts.)

3. What about rush orders? Is the premium worth it?

Yes. Period.

Look, I'm not saying rush fees are fun to pay. But the value isn't the speed—it's the certainty. In March 2024, we paid $400 extra for a rush order on branded boxes. The alternative was missing a client event where we needed those boxes. The $400 was 3% of the event budget. Missing the deadline would have cost us $15,000 in lost credibility. (The 'cheap' option wasn't cheap. It was risky.)

If you don't have a hard deadline, standard turnaround is fine. But if a late delivery means a real loss, pay for the guarantee.

4. Are the coupon codes legit, or are they just marketing?

This was true 5 years ago when many coupon codes were just branding exercises. Today, Berlin Packaging's coupons actually save money. I've used at least 8 different codes over three years. Some were for percentage off, some were free shipping.

One tip: codes often have exclusions (like on tape or custom sizes). I built a cost calculator after I got burned once—thinking a 20% off code applied to everything, but it excluded my primary product. Always read the fine print. (Ugh.)

5. Is their packaging eco-friendly?

I can't give you a blanket yes. From the outside, it looks like any large supplier—some eco options, some not. I don't have hard data on their full sustainability profile. What I can say anecdotally is: they offer recycled-content boxes and biodegradable bubble wrap alternatives. But if you need certified eco-friendly materials (like FSC-certified), ask specifically. Don't assume.

I get why people want a simple yes/no. But in procurement, vague claims without certification are a red flag. Berlin Packaging doesn't seem to over-claim on this, which I actually respect.

6. Should I use Berlin Packaging for one-off small orders?

Probably not the best fit. For 25 business cards or a single roll of tape, you're better off at a local shop or even an office supply store. Berlin Packaging's strength is in quantities from 100 to 25,000+. For tiny orders, the shipping cost eats into any savings. (I learned that one early on—wasted $12 on shipping for a $15 order of foam boards. Dumb.)

7. What's the one thing most people miss before ordering?

The turnaround time on printed custom items. A standard box order might ship in 2 days. A custom-printed flyer with proofing? That can be 7-10 business days. People assume the same speed applies to both. It doesn't.

In 2022, I almost missed a product launch because I assumed printed posters would ship as fast as plain boxes. The sales rep (thankfully) flagged it. Now I always ask: "Is this standard stock or custom print?" before I commit to a timeline.

Pricing as of January 2025; verify current rates. This is based on my experience as a procurement manager—YMMV depending on volume and product mix.
